Structure

A skewb consists of 8 corners and 6 square center pieces.

Corner Pieces

Center Pieces

Solving Placement

Unlike solving placement of 3×3 which the face is in the front, solving a Skewb is to turn the corner and the skewb should be placed with corners facing you.

Algorithm:

Single letter: Turn 120° clockwise
Letter + ‘: Turn 120° counterclockwise

x: whole rotation 90°

x2: whole rotation 180°

Solving Steps
*Gray means unsolved pieces

Solve the
white face
Solve the
yellow corners
Solve the
yellow face
Solve all the
center pieces
(and the Skewb)

Step I. Solve the white face

1

Solve the white corners

Turn one of the white corner to the top. Place it facing you, solve the other white corners counterclockwise in turn.

Placement: Place the white center piece facing up.

Take the white-green-orange corner as an example

①The color of the next corner is determined by the color of the solved corner. The starting corner is white-green-or-ange corner, place it facing you, its right side is green so the next corner (No.2 corner) should contain green (the white-green-red corner). Find the white-green-red corner and solve it.

②Same as above, the next corner (No.3 corner) should contain red color as the white-green-red corner has been solved.

③And so on, find the next corner according to the previous solved corner and solve it in turn counterclockwise.

2

Solve the white corner

Do the algorithm according to the different positions of the corners till all the white corner are solved.

Placement: Place the white center piece facing up.

CaseA:
The white side of the corner is on the front left

Algorithm: D R D’ R’

CaseB:
The white side of the corner is on the front right

Algorithm: D’ L’ D L

Step II. Solve the yellow corners

Do the algorithm according to the different positions of the yellow corners, then solve it to the opposite side of the white face

Algorithm S: R’ r R r’*
*Algorithm S is the key algorithm in solving a Skewb Step II, III and IV can be handled merely with Algorithm S.

Placement: Place the white face on the front left.

CaseA:
The yellow side of 2 yellow corner are on the right back face.

Place 2 diagonal yellow corner on the right back and 1 yellow corner on the top as in the picture below. Do the Algorithm S to reach case B.

CaseB:
No yellow sides on the right back face.

Place 2 neighbouring yellow sides at the bottom. Do Algorithm S to solve all the yellow corners.

Step III. Solve the yellow face

Adjust the position of the yellow center, do the algorithm to solve it to the face of the yellow corner.

Placement: Place the white face on the front left and the yellow center piece on the left back.

Algorithm: :(S x2 S)*
That is(R’ r R r’ x2 R’ r R r’)
*This algorithm is also called Center Switching. x2 is the whole rotation 180°.

Step IV. Solve all the center pieces (and the Skewb)

Observe the solved faces and do the algorithm according to below following cases, then the Skewb is solved.

CaseA: Only the yellow and white faces are solved.

Placement: Place the yellow face and white face on the top and bottom (Their position can be swapped).

Reach case B by doing the Algorithm (S x2 S) once.

CaseB: The yellow, white and another faces are solved.

Placement: Place the third solved face on the front left, the yellow face and white face on the top and bottom If the 3 center pieces could be clockwise switched and get solved, keep the placement. If not, do x2 to change the placement of the yellow and white faces.

Get the cube solved by doing the algorithm (S x2 S) once.

Take the yellow , white and blue faces solved as an example.
